I realise this review has been a while in coming. For once, it’s not because I haven’t got round to it, or because I forgot to publish. It’s because there’s very little of note to say.
On the face of it, the race was set to be a cracker. Four top teams slugging it out, a returning 7-time world champion, Britain v. Germany, Alonso v. Hamilton and the rest of it. In truth, the biggest excitement was watching Nico Hulkenberg pass a much slower Jarno Trulli after recovering from an early spin.
The race was, in fact, so dull that I fell asleep with 10 laps to go. Bahrain’s new layout is uninspiring and cars seem unable to follow one another in close quarters. Why? Out come the usual theories of aerodynamic grip and wings, but maybe, just maybe, such views are misplaced. More on that another time, but in the meantime, let’s hope Australia is better. After all, it’s hard to stay awake for that race for the time difference alone!
