The Steelers Have It!
Last night (or rather, in the very early hours of this morning) the Pittsburgh Steelers were crowned Superbowl XL champions in Detriot, coming out winners by 21 - 10. It was a fantastic game :)
The Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off, and the Seattle Seahawks offence started well, gaining good yardage. The Steelers couldn't get any offence going, and the Seahawks drew first blood, leading 3- 0. It stayed like this until the last 2 minutes of the half, when Pittsburgh went in for a touchdown to lead 7 -3 at the break. The Steelers had generally looked the better team up until this point, but a few errors had meant they hadn't put that difference pn the scoreboard.
However, after half time, the Steelers came out fighting, and scored off of only the second play of their possesion, with Willie Parker running through the defensive line on the right, leaving the Seahawks trailing behind him.
This made the game 14 - 3 after the extra point, and some of the (minority) Steelers fans amongst us were calling the game there and then. I wasn't going to call it with half the game left, however.
On the Steelers' next possession, they drove into the red zone, and looked like going in for the touchdown, until a pass into the end zone was picked off at the 3-yard line, and returned for 75 yards, the longest in NFL Superbowl history. On the very first play of the Seahawks' drive, the ball went into the end zone, making the game 14 - 10 to the Steelers.
There was still all to play for. However, try as the Seahawks did, they wouldn't do it, for the Steelers had one more big play up their sleeve.
Off the snap, the quarterback handed the ball off to the half-back, who ran to the left. he then handed the ball off again to wide receiver Randle El. This looked like a classic reverse play - playing the ball to one side, but then handing it off again to the other, and running to the other side - but no, this was no running play, it was the Randle El passing special (despite being a wide receiver, he was actually a quarterback in college). He then launched the ball into the end zone, where Heinz Ward caught the ball, making the score 21 - 10 to the Steelers, with 10 minutes left, and the game was finished.
I'm glad I stayed up to watch it - and still managed to be up at 7:30 this morning :)
